Feast are delighted to announce an exciting competition for local talent to design shutter art on Norwood Road, SE27.
In collaboration with the Lambeth Outer London Fund and the Greater London Authority, we are inviting local graphic designers, artists and budding creatives to submit their ideas on how to bring to life the shutter façades of four shop units which make up the Adarshi Pharmacy 485 – 491 Norwood Road, West Norwood, London, SE27.
This is a wonderful opportunity for one of our many local talented creatives to see their work immortalised on our high street on a prominent, large site. It is also a great opportunity for the people of West Norwood to have their say, as the winning design will be chosen by you! There is limited budget available on this project – enough to cover the production costs, but no design fee. This design would be a ‘gift’ to the people of West Norwood and a chance to create something the residents and businesses of West Norwood can be proud of.
First stage: call out to designers to submit their ideas [as a pdf] to hello@westnorwoodfeast.comwestnorwoodfeast.com by Wednesday 25th June – mark the subject title as: “Shutter Design Submission by [your name]”
You can submit more than one design per person, but please no more than five.
Second stage: the judging panel – made up of members of Lambeth, the GLA, Feast, The West Norwood Public Realm Project team and the owner of Adarshi Pharmacy – will then shortlist the entries down to three designs that meet the criteria.
Feast will then post the three finalists artwork on the Feast Facebook page and invite followers to vote for their favourite.
Whichever design gets the most votes, wins the competition. The winning design then goes into production, to be in place by the end of July.
The entry criteria:
This competition is open to all graphic designers, artists and creatives who live or work in West Norwood.
The brief is to create a piece of artwork that will work across all four of the shutter panels. Two panels remain closed permanently whilst two are open daily.
By means of a creative launch pad we are keen to see ideas that reflect the vibrancy and diversity of the area. West Norwood has a rich history of people, buildings and characters – it is an opportunity to bring the essence of West Norwood alive in a fun, humorous and vibrant way.
Lambeth have advised not to feature words on the designs as this would have to go through planning for advertising consent – it also helps control the visual noise.
The surface of the shutters is corrugated, so the design will need to work with that – highly detailed designs don’t translate well on that kind of surface – graphic simplicity is best.
The preference would be to apply the winning design to vinyl to allow for longevity. The shop owner is required to maintain this design for 10 years.
All design submissions must be received by Wed 25th June by 6pm. Following an online vote with the public, the winning design will need to be chosen by 7 July 2014.
This is a nice little opportunity for West Norwood to once again, show that we have a collaborative community who are passionate about their locality. Let’s grab this chance to work in partnership with Lambeth!
